Love Doesn’t Hurt “Domestic Violence” Program
A woman is beaten every 12 seconds in the United States. Over 4,000 women are killed each year at the hands of their batterers. Battering is the most under-reported crime in the country. One out of every two American women will be beaten at least once in the course of an intimate relationship. 75% of women who are battered are divorced or separated from their abusers at the time of the incident. U.S. Department of Justice,
"Report to the Nation on Crime and Justice: the Data," Washington, D.C. October (1983). Hurting people hurt people. Women who have been victims of domestic violence have a higher risk of becoming batterers. Women who are stressed oftentimes take their frustrations out on innocent victims (their children). The cost to house an inmate has drained our country’s economy. The jails and prisons are full of women who with the right guidance could’ve avoided the justice system altogether. African American women who are jailed who don’t have close relatives to care for their children usually lose their children to the foster care system. Studies showed that over half (53 percent) of the inmates of state correctional facilities had grown up without the benefits of a two parent household. "No-Fault Divorce: Proposed Solutions to a National Tragedy," 1993 Journal of Legal Studies 2, 19, citing B. Chapman, Fairness for Families: An Organing Theme for the Administration's Social Policies, 2 The Journal of Family and Culture 23 (1986). Having an incarcerated parent only reinforces the generational impact of fatherless homes.
